As principal, I had just reassured anxious parents that their kindergarteners would have a wonderful first day of school. I was on my way back to the office when the head caretaker asked me if I had heard the news: a plane had just slammed into the North Tower of the World Trade Centre. As the devastation unfolded, I relieved two of my teachers whose sons worked at the World Trade Centre so that they could contact their children. Fortunately, they were both safe and out of harm’s way. Many others were not so lucky. We remember them today, and all those who came to their aid.
