I retired from my career as an educator in 2003. At the time I kept all my literacy resources, thinking that I would like to volunteer to help people improve their reading skills. That didn’t happen. But guess what? More than a dozen years later, I’m still writing lesson plans and preparing teaching resources.
These two young men in the Syrian family that our group has sponsored are now working. They are happy to have jobs, but were worried because they had to quit their ESL classes. We promised that we would teach them English after work. Since many of the ESL volunteer tutors have had no pedagogical training, I’ve taken over the job of preparing and writing up the lesson plans for the four classes each week.
It certainly keeps me out of mischief. So much for working on my next novel. At least for now…
