Abandoning the last draft of Finding Home for months turned out to be a wise move. Why? When I re-read the manuscript last weekend, I realized that once Sarah arrives in Canada to find her family, I lost interest in her in favour of Richard’s story. If a writer loses interest, what hope does a reader have?
The solution? Chase Sarah up a tree and throw stones at her. Not literally. I just had to come up with complications that would increase the dramatic tension and give Sarah a more active role. But how much control would an orphaned domestic from the slums of east London have in 1870’s Canada? Possibly a lot if she learned a secret whose telling would rip apart the small rural community.
The new scenario requires some massaging of the current story, but both my co-author and I are excited about this new plot twist. Stay tuned…
